After marrying and relocating to the United States, she received her teaching certification through the University of North Carolina at Wilmington. Later, she received a Masters in Education from Walden University. With seventeen years of teaching experience, she has taught in North Carolina, Hawaii, and Virginia.
A lifelong learner, Lisette completed a post graduate program in Behavior Analysis from George Mason University and is pursuing becoming a Board Certified Behavior Analyst. She is committed to education by providing meaningful learning experiences through which individuals can make connections and be motivated to realize their personal best.
Ghana native Dr. Gymama Slaughter, PhD, is an Associate Professor of Electrical and Computer engineering at ODU. She is a Bioengineer with broad interests in the integration of electronics concepts with life science principles to develop innovative devices to diagnose disease and deliver drug therapy to target sites.

She is a Bioengineer with broad interests in the integration of electronics concepts with life science principles to develop innovative devices to diagnose disease and deliver drug therapy to target sites.
Much of her research is supported by multi-milion dollar grants from the National Institutes of Health (NIH), National Science Foundation, Department of Defense, Andrew W. Mellon Foundation, and state programs. She is the Executive Director of ODU's Center for Bioelectronics, which focuses on the use of ultra-short, high-voltage pulse technology to treat cancer.
Dr. Slaughter is also Director of the NIH Graduate Research Training Initiative for Student Enhancement (G-RISE) at ODU, a National Institute of General Medical Sciences-funded predoctoral training program in Biomedical Research housed in the Center for Bioelectronics.
Additionally, Slaughter has published more than 100 peer-reviewed articles, and is an associate editor of the IEEE Sensors Journal, published by the Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers.

After singing professionally from NY through Texas, she paused her career to focus on her two now adult children. She has fused her performing abilities, fluency in many languages, and innate fitness to become a Zumba® and African Dance instructor, teaching thousands of kids and adults in the Hampton Roads area; as well as Zumba® instructors worldwide. Ms. Addico Cohen has created several highly acclaimed avenues through which she shares her African culture with adults and children alike, using the arts, history, and language. She has created a 3 tier educational program that has placed her and TACA on the Teaching Roster of the Virginia Commission for the Arts. She is the inaugural recipient of the 2024 VA Beach National Tourism & Travel Award for Arts & Culture.
