We are excited to be partnering with the Virginia Arts Festival and the ViBe Creative District to bring you the innovative series: Taste the Rhythm! Join us every quarter for a 2 hour event featuring the culture and rhythm(s) of an African/African Diaspora country, followed by a moment of fellowship and community with that country's food! 😋
We will kick off the 2026 series with Trinidad & Tobago on Saturday January 17, 3-5 pm at the Robin Hixon Theatre of the Clay & Jay Barr Education Center (440 Bank St. in Norfolk, VA 23510) with Kieron Sergeant!

Generations of the community came together and created MAGIC at the African Heritage Dance & Drumming Workshop at Norfolk State University on November 21 and 22, 2005. THANK YOU to our participants, volunteers, drummers, presenters; and the Norfolk State University Health & Wellness Initiative and NSU Dance Theatre and Dr. Sheila Ward for hosting us! The African Heritage Dance & Drumming Workshop was made possible with a Challenge America grant from the National Endowment for the Arts.
On September 10, we kicked off Virginia's African Diaspora Heritage Month with a commemoration at the Old Dominion University in Norfolk, VA. We thank: the VA African Diaspora Committee for making Bill HJ133 proclaiming every September as African Diaspora Heritage Month a reality; Distinguished guests, local leaders - Norfolk Delegate Jackie Hopes Glass and Mayor Dr. Kenny Alexander - and international dignitaries - HE Joaquim do Espírito Santo, Angolan Ambassador to the US - for their attendance and participation; and the Old Dominion University Department of Sociology and Criminal Justice, Office of Academic Affairs, Office of Community Relations, and Office of Intercultural Relations for hosting and making the event physically possible; Eastern VA Medical School for health screenings; and support and funding from VA Humanities, Prosper Africa, and the Hampton Roads Community Foundation.
A quick video compilation created by the City of VA Beach Arts & Humanities Commission, which sponsored this engaging program for our community, featuring Jamin Beats, Onyansapow Bowaanopow, Asaase Yaa Cultural Foundation, and the TACA Diaspora Dance Ensemble. What a great time we had on May 20!
