Guest Instructor: Awa Ayesha

Dancing since the age of 4, Awa Ayesha was raised in Harlem by a family from Côte d’Ivoire and grew up with rhythm in her blood. Her foundation spans jazz, hip-hop, West African traditional, Afro-fusion, and heels — a versatility that shaped her into a dynamic force on and off the stage. For over a decade, she has taught Afro dance, introducing thousands to the movement, music, and meaning of African culture. In 2019, she made history by bringing Coupé Décalé dance classes to New York City, igniting a cultural wave that she continues to spread nationwide. Her mission is deeply rooted in preserving and sharing her Ivorian heritage, ensuring that every class is not just movement, but a cultural exchange.

She has shared stages and music video sets with global artists including Baky, Diamond Platnumz, BM, Davido, and more. With over 7+ million YouTube views on her Afro-dance choreographies, Awa’s influence reaches world-famous stages and venues nationwide, including Barclays Center, Yankee Stadium, Mercedes-Benz Stadium and more. She is the founder of Afro Unlocked USA, a traveling Afro dance camp, and continues to teach Afro-performance intensives and workshops across the nation, blending artistry, authenticity, and culture.

At the heart of her teaching is her CCP Workshop Framework, built to spread Ivorian culture through Coupé Décalé dance in three unique ways: culture-focused workshop, choreography-focused workshop, and performance intensive workshops - blending artistry, authenticity, and culture into her sessions. Awa Ayesha isn’t just dancing — she’s building bridges between Africa and the world, one step, one story, and one community at a time.

I didn’t even know there was a Virginia African Diaspora Heritage Month until I heard about this event. WOW! Amazing job connecting the continent to us and the rest of the Diaspora. I never even considered Africans being in Peru! Top notch dancing and cultural performances. Longer next time!"
